Entering Safe Mode in Any Windows

Definition

Safe Mode is a mode of operation by application software that enables users of Windows to access an altered version of Windows and correct any problems that may be preventing Windows from booting up normally. Safe mode only allows essential system programs and services to start up at boot. Different Windows use different steps to enter safe mode, but most of them requires to press F8 before the Windows logo show up.

→ Safe Mode in Windows XP    
    For Windows XP to start in Safe Mode, follow these steps:

1. Reboot or turn on your computer
2. Press the F8 key as your computer start, before the Windows XP logo appears 
3. At the Advanced Boot Options, select Safe Mode 
4. Press Enter 

→ Safe Mode in Windows Vista
    For Windows Vista to start in Safe Mode, follow these steps: 

1. Reboot or turn on the computer 
2. Press F8 key as your computer start, before the Windows Vista logo appears 
3. At the Advanced Boot Options, select Safe Mode 
4. Press Enter 

→ Safe Mode in Windows 7
    For Windows 7 to start in Safe Mode, follow these steps: 

1. Reboot or turn on the computer 
2. Press F8 key as your computer start, before the Windows 7 logo appears 
3. Select Safe Mode 
4. Press Enter

→ Safe Mode in Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10
    For Windows 8 or Windows 10 to boot into Safe Mode, follow these steps :

1. Reboot or turn on the computer 
2. Boot into Windows until the logo screen appears.If you don’t have a login screen showing, boot into the system and click on Settings
3. Press the Power button 
4. While holding the Shift key, click Restart 
5. Select Troubleshoot 
6. Select Advanced options 
7. Select Startup Settings 
8. Click Restart 

Your computer may restart several times and open the Startup Settings screen automatically Press the F4 key to boot into Safe Mode. For the other 2 options of Safe Mode, press F5 to boot into Safe Mode with Networking or press F6 to boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt

If the F keys don’t work to boot into Safe Mode even after following the above tips, you can also run msconfig from within Windows (you need to boot into Windows first): 

1. Boot into Windows 
2. Click Start and Run (or press Windows logo + R on your keyboard)
3. Type msconfig, then click Ok
4. Go to the Boot tab (Boot.ini for Windows XP users) 
5. Check the Safe Boot checkbox (The /SAFEBOOT for Windows XP users) 
6. Click OK 
7. Click Restart
